Since its introduction in March 2012, the J/70 has quickly established itself worldwide with 125+ boats sailing in 15+ countries in 2012, and 350+ boats to be sailing in 2013. So, far over a dozen fleets have developed in the USA and over a half-dozen countries in Europe are forming one-design fleets. In addition, fleets are developing in South America and the Pacific Rim.
The first one-design J/70 event was held in September, 2012 when the New York Yacht Club chose the J/70 to participate in the NYYC Invitational Cup US Qualifying Series held in Newport, Rhode Island. Twelve boats sailed with twenty-four yacht club teams participating in the event.
The first J/70 Midwinters are being held in January 2013 in conjunction with Quantum Key West Race Week in Key West, Florida. Nearly forty boats will be participating in the event, with numerous World, European, National and Regional champion sailors from various class participating.
The first J/70 North Americans will be held in September 2013 in Annapolis, Maryland and well over fifty boats are expected for this event hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club.
The first J/70 Euro Cup is planned for September 2013 on Lago di Garda, Italy. Lake Garda is one of Europe's most famous lakes for sailing, with remarkably consistent addabatic winds flowing through the Italian Alps in northern Italy.
