YACHT.DE J/9 Daysailer Boat Test in Switzerland

Sailing pleasure reduced to the essentials
(Davos, Switzerland)- Michael Good, Yacht.de journalist and reviewer, provided this initial overview of their J/9 “boat test” in Switzerland.  Here is what he had to say:
“J/Boats in the USA has a new weekender on offer. The concept of the J/9 is very simple, the optics are attractive.
After the shipyard in Newport (Rhode Island) on the American east coast had pushed ahead with expanding the program in the performance cruiser segment for a long time, the Americans are now surprising again with the announcement of a real dayboat or weekender called the “J/9 Daysailer”. The new model is said to be a late successor to the legendary and widely sold J/100. With this boat, the brand last had a real daysailer in its brand portfolio (test in YACHT 24/2006).

Now the J/9 takes over the successful concept. The features: large cockpit, a short and flat cabin structure, slim and pretty lines, little freeboard, and a layout that is as uncomplicated as possible with unrestricted one-handed suitability – a typical daysailer or weekender. J/Boats has reduced the concept to the essentials. “Keep it simple” is the slogan.

The boat comes with a simple aluminum rig with a spreader. Anyone who sails singlehanded a lot can also have a self-tacking track for the jib fitted (see above) as an alternative to the slightly overlapping 105% jib. For more sporty sailors, a permanently attached bowsprit made of carbon fiber for a gennaker or Code Zero is also possible. Customers also have to choose whether they want to equip the boat with a small built-in diesel or with an electric motor. However, both drive variants are only available as an option and for a corresponding surcharge. Equally unusual and interesting is the bathing platform at the stern, which is semi-separated from the long cockpit.

The interior below the deck is simple, in accordance with the concept. For use as a weekender, the boat offers a double berth in the bow.
A small toilet is also integrated into the forepeak.
For the time being, the J/9 will only be manufactured in the USA. The first boat was delivered to their Swiss distributor- Dyna Sportboats- in autumn and was made available to the YACHT editorial team there for a test.
On the day of the test, there was almost no wind at all. However, with just a whisper of wind, the J/9 still shows very good and surprisingly agile sailing characteristics. The detailed test is planned for YACHT issue no. 4/2023. The magazine will be published in early February.  Here is the YACHT.DE online summary on the J/9 boat test.  For more J/9 daysailer sailing information

J/Newsletter- January 4th, 2023

The year 2022 ended better than anyone could have expected after surviving the previous two years of dealing with the covid-19 pandemic. With travel opened up completely around the world, masking requirements gone everywhere, it was as if the world had gotten the proverbial “get out of jail free” card when playing Monopoly! Many regattas were experiencing back to pre-pandemic levels of participation and others even experienced record-breaking participation. So eager were sailors to get back on the water that it was a bit of a herd mentality, like lemmings going over the proverbial cliff (not literally, of course). Take one case, for example, the J/70 World Championship in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Despite a “hard” limit of 90 entries, the Yacht Club Monaco had a “waiting list” of 90 more willing teams that wished to participate IF any of the first 90 qualifiers withdrew! As it was, many teams on that waitlist did, in fact, make it to enjoy the charms of the little principality on the Mediterranean Sea.
As 2022 came to a close in December, there were seven events that all experienced more entries by 20-50% over last year’s numbers… a trend that portends good news for 2023.
Starting with our friends Down Under in South America, the Veleiros do Sul Yacht Club in Porto Alegre, Brazil held the 2022 J/70 South American Championship for an ultra-competitive fleet from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile. Just five points separated the top four boats after an eleven-race series!
Leap-frogging northeast across the South Atlantic Ocean to the Middle East, we find the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club hosted the inaugural IRC Middle East Championship. Sailing took place off Dubai, United Arab Emirates with a fleet of 30+ boats enjoying sunny, windy days on the Persian Gulf. The large contingent of J/22s dominated their IRC class as well as racing one-design. Plus, a J/80, J/111, J/105, and J/122 all enjoyed good sailing, and some added to their silverware collection!
Heading over to Europe, Spanish J/70 sailors are enjoying their winter series in two of the nicer “garden spots” in Spain on opposite coasts of their country. Off to the west, sailing on the Atlantic Ocean, the J/70 Villalia Winter Series- Act III- was sailed off Vigo, Spain for a fleet of fifteen boats. Then, on their east coast in the famous port city of Barcelona (home of the 2024 America’s Cup), the Barcelona J/70 Winter Series- Act III- saw a fleet of 15 boats enjoy good racing.  Hosted by the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona, their RC/PRO team managed to run six more races on the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Speaking of warm waters, we zoom over to the southeast USA to see both offshore and one-design activity taking place. First, the SORC Islands in the Stream Series started with the Nassau Cup Race, starting off in Miami, FL, the fleet headed across the infamous Gulf Stream, over the Bahamas Banks to the resort city of Nassau, Bahamas. Then, they had the fast blast up the Gulf Stream for the Miami to Palm Beach Race in Florida. Now, the SORC series had its third event, the Ft Lauderdale to Key West Race. Hosting the race are the Storm Trysail Club and Lauderdale Yacht Club for the highly competitive ORC fleet of twenty-two boats. four J/122s, J/121, J/111, J/120, and J/92. The preview and updated standings are highlighted below.
In addition, the Bacardi J/70 Winters Series- Act I- took place off Coconut Grove, FL. for a twenty-boat fleet. The host Shake-A-Leg Foundation saw teams from the USA, Mexico, Cayman Islands, and Canada enjoy gorgeous sailing on the beautiful aquamarine waters of Biscayne Bay.
Upcoming events- below are preview highlights of the following events taking place soon:

J/88 Midwinters in St. Petersburg, Florida, hosted by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on Tampa Bay.
J/22 California Dreamin’ Match Series in San Francisco, CA with St. Francis Yacht Club hosting the regatta on San Francisco Bay.

Brazilians Sweep J/70 South American Championships
(Porto Alegre, Brazil)- From December 3rd to 9th, 2022, the Veleiros do Sul Yacht Club in Porto Alegre, Brazil hosted the fourteen-boat J/70 fleet for this year’s South American Championship. The VSYC Race Committee and PRO team managed to run 11 of the 12 races scheduled, much to the delight of all sailors.

It was a dramatic battle for the podium and when the dust had cleared from the battlefield, just five points separated the top four boats. In the end, it was a sweep of the podium by Brazilian teams. Winning was Renato Cunha’s TO NESSA with a crew of Marco Grael, Kadja Brandão, Felipe Fraquelli, and André Fonseca- crowned the 2022 South American Champions!

Just three points back tied at 40 pts each were two other tough competitors. Winning the countback to take the silver medal was Haroldo Solberg’s VIKING with a crew of Geison Mendes, Mario Tinoco, and Gabriel Silva.

Losing that heartbreaking countback to at least salvage a bronze medal was Silvio Morelli’s MALCRIADO with a crew of Samuel Albrecht, Gustavo Thiesen, and Rodolfo Streibel.

CORINTHIANS DIVISION In the Corinthian Division (above), winning was Marcos Pinto Ribeiro’s BOSSA NOVA with his team of Tiago Quevedo, Breno Kneipp, Iam Paim, and Georgia Rodrigues. The next two places on the podium went to Uruguayan teams. Taking silver was Pedro Garra’s PLAN B with a crew of Juan Real de Azúia, Quique Schickendantz, and Ivan Guicheff. Then, happy to wear the bronze medals were Diego Wulff’s SHAMBHALA with a team of Carlos Fraschini, Francisco Bottino, and Frederico Fraschini.
ONE-PRO DIVISION As the sole entry in the One-Pro Division, it was a foregone conclusion that Argentinean Sergio Pendola’s CACIQUE team of Matias Santangelo, Juan Filidoro, and Ignacio Giammona, would become the winners given that they started every race!
The next South American of J/70 will be in December 2023 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Follow the Brazilian J/70 Class on Facebook here

Fun J/22 Racing in IRC Middle East Championship
J/80 and J/122 Have Good Performances
(Dubai, United Arab Emirates)- Over the holiday weekend in late December, the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club in the United Arab Emirates hosted the IRC Middle East Championship with a variety of J/Teams sailing the three-day event. The sailing took place on the Persian Gulf just offshore of the famous Burj Al Arab Hotel on the shoreline… a 5-star luxury resort hotel designed to look like a tall mainsail flying in the sky!
The Dubai Offshore SC’s Race Committee and PRO team, along with their assorted mark boat volunteers, managed to run a good six-race series over the two-day regatta.

In the IRC 1 Division, we find the J/122 EL SERAYA, skippered and owned by Fawzi Sultan from Kuwait, ended up in fifth place with mostly mid-fleet finishes.

In the always competitive IRC 2 Division, taking the bronze medal was Mark Nolan’s J/80 BLUEY, with a strong record of  3-3-3-1-3-3 for 13 pts net. His compatriots on the J/105 Twister, sailed by Sian Rowlands, sailed OK on the first day with mostly mid-fleet finishes, but unfortunately could not participate on the second day.

The large IRC 3 Division included a half-dozen very well-sailed J/22s. In fact, the J/22s pretty much dominated the top of the leaderboard. Taking 2nd was Stefano Martini & Victor Mosanya’s NEMO with a 4-2-2-1-4-4 tally for 13 pts net. Earning the bronze medal for the third step on the podium was Bevan Farmer’s DRAMA QUEEN with a 3-3-3-3-2-2 record for 13 pts net. He lost the tiebreaker on countback. Fourth went to Demos Stogiannidis & Evan Hatzis’s J/22 MAI J with a 9-6-6-4-3-3 record for 22 pts net.

J/22 Class Unlike the IRC standings, it was Farmer’s DRAMA QUEEN that took one-design class honors as the J/22s were scored as a separate fleet! Their 8 pts net tally was sufficient to beat the NEMO duo by just 1 pt! Trailing those two boats by a 7 pt margin was the other duo on MAI J to take the bronze. Rounding out the top five were Dennis Do Rond’s JUST LIKE THAT in 4th and Ronan Joile’s CHAOS in 5th position.   Sailing photo credits- Pia Torelli & Neil Corder/ Waterwise Photography  For more Dubai Offshore Sailing Club information

Ft Lauderdale to Key West Race Preview
SORC Islands in the Stream Series Update
(Miami, Florida)- The 2022-2023 Islands in the Stream Series kicked off the season with the famous “blast across the Stream”- the Nassau Cup Race. Then, after a brief respite, the fleet sailed the 60.0nm Miami to Palm Beach Race. Now, the fleet is set to race the classic Ft Lauderdale to Key West Race this weekend. Hosting the race are the Storm Trysail Club and Lauderdale Yacht Club for the highly competitive ORC fleet of twenty-two boats. The race starts on November 4th off Government Cut in Miami.
The SORC Islands in the Stream Series consists of four races:

Nov 3- Miami- Nassau Cup
Dec 2- Palm Beach Race
Jan 4- Lauderdale- Key West Race
Feb 9- Port Canaveral Race

The Lauderdale- Key West Race of 160.0nm has always been popular since it acts as a “feeder race” to the annual Key West Race Week taking place later in Key West. For 2023, those participants have the added bonus of staying around for another week of racing in America’s only Caribbean-style race week in the Florida Keys- this year’s The Southernmost Regatta powered by Sailing Inc from Cleveland, Ohio.

The Key West Race itself presents numerous challenges to the racers. It’s a simple enough race track. Head south to several key turning marks to be left to starboard- 68.0nm to Elbow Key Light, 12.0nm more to Molasses Reef Light, 53.0nm more to Sombrero Key Light, 45.0nm more to Key West Channel buoy #2, then a short 6.0nm sprint north up the channel to the finish off Truman Annex Navy base.
The race has always been tactically challenging since the simple strategy is to avoid at all costs the swiftly flowing Gulf Stream with its 3-6 kts north-northeast current. Whether it’s the classic northeast sleigh ride under spinnakers all the way around the Keys to the west-northwest post-front reach and windward beat short-tacking into the reef, the tactics are very similar. No matter what, tacking & gybing towards the reefs always provides current relief, so the navigators are an integral part of the decision-making process for the entire race!

After the first two races, the Nassau Cup Race (from Miami, FL to Nassau, Bahamas) and the Wirth Munroe Memorial Race (from Miami, FL to Palm Beach, FL), the ORC B Division leaderboard has J/Teams occupying the top six slots! Here are the current standings:
ORC B Division

Tom Sutton’s J/122 LEADING EDGE
Matt Schaedler’s J/122 BLITZKRIEG
Constantine Baris’ J/122 DIRE WOLF
Forbes Durdin & Chris Lewis’ J/121 BEAR
Andrew Berdon’s J/111 SUMMER STORM
Andrew Clark’s J/122 ZIG ZAG

Other teams sailing that are yet to crack the top five in the ORC B or C Division are David Nesbitt’s J/92 HILLBILLY, and John Harvey & Rick Titsworth’s J/120 SLEEPING TIGER- SOUTH. Good luck to all!  Follow SORC Islands in the Stream Series here on Facebook   For more SORC Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race sailing information & tracking

LAGUARDIA & MOREIRA Wins J/70 Villalia Winter Series- Act III
(Vigo, Spain)- The LAGUARDIA & MOREIRA team skippered by Gonzalo Araújo, was the winner of the third series of the Villalia J/70 Winter Series held last weekend in Vigo. In addition, this new victory enables Araújo’s team to maintain in the overall winter series.
Just one point back was the young Canarian Jorge Martínez Doreste on his HANG-TEN CSI. Behind them in third place was Sancho Páramo and Pablo Iglesias’ NACUA SOGACSA. The balance of the top five was Guillermo Alonso Santoro’s SENECA SW in fourth and Luis Perez Canal’s ABRIL VERDE in fifth position.
The regatta had plenty of wind on the first day and too much on Sunday. A huge storm offshore forced the cancellation on Sunday.
On the first day, nice gentle breezes blew into the Vigo estuary that allowed four races to be held. The wind blew eight knots from the west for the first race. After three general recalls (!), the race took place with  Araújo prevailing and Guillermo Alonso surprised everyone taking his SENECA SW to second place, third was Luis Martín Cabiedes’ NOTICIA.
For the next two races, the wind maintained the same direction and strength. Doreste’s HANG-TEN CSI won the second race, while Ramon Ojea’s PAZO DE CEA took the third race.
In the final race of the day, the wind gradually subsided to 6 kts, but enough to complete the race. Winning was Luis Bugallo’s MARNATURA I.
As a result, the provisional J/70 Villalia Winter Series overall standings are:

LAGUARDIA & MOREIRA- 33 points
NACUA SOGACSA- 44 points
ABRIL VERDE- 53 points
ABRIL ROJO- 55 points
PAZO DE CEA- 60 points

ROWDY & EMPEIRIA Lead Chicago Sweep of Bacardi J/70 Winter Series- Act I
(Coconut Grove/Miami, Florida)- The Bacardi J/70 Winter Series kicked off on 17-18 December 2022 at Shake-A-Leg Miami for a fleet of twenty boats from across the USA, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, and Canada. The regatta PRO managed to run six races over the two-day series, permitting a discard race in the scorelines.
The regatta has attracted a remarkable diversity of talent from all four countries and spans the entire USA from coast-to-coast. Amongst the fleet were sprinkled over a dozen Olympic Medallists, World Champions, and North American Champions in classes as diverse as J/22s, J/24s, J/70s, J/80s, Melges 24s, Lightnings, and Etchells 22s to name a few.

In the end, it was a Chicago duo that took the top two spots. Winning was Rich Witzel’s ROWDY crew which included Jud Smith, Carlos Robles, and Tomas Dietrich. Their performance was impressive, considering they scored four bullets and a third, enabling them to skip the last race and win with 7 pts net!
The silver was taken by fellow Chicagoan John Heaton skippering EMPEIRIA with his team of Will Felder, Zeke Horowitz, and Zac Mason. Theirs was an equally amazing scoreline counting only podium finishes- a 2-3-2-1-2 for 10 pts.
Rounding out the podium was the Mexican team on BLACK MAMBA, skippered by Fernando Pertez Ontiverso with a crew of Goncalo Ribiero, Bernardo Freitas, and River Paquin from San Diego Yacht Club.
Completing the top five in this hotly competitive fleet was John Brim’s RIMETTE in fourth place and Bob Hughes’ HEARTBREAKER in fifth place.  For more Bacardi J/70 Winter Series sailing information

TENAZ wins Act III of the Barcelona J/70 Winter Series
(Barcelona, Spain)- The third event of the Barcelona J/70 Winter Series had a “see-saw” battle between the top three boats over the 10-race regatta, no throw-out regatta. The Real Club Nautico de Barcelona’s Race Committee and PRO team did an admirable job of getting in the ten races over the weekend of December 9th to 11th.

Winning the regatta was Pablo Garriga’s TENAZ team with 23 pts. Second went to Luis Martin Cabiedes’ NOTICIA with 25 pts, and the final step on the podium was Dario Alvaredo’s HANG TEN with 27 pts. Rounding out the top five saw Martinez Doreste’s CLINICAS W in 4th place and Piotr Tarnacki’s Polish team on ELESSAR 2 in fifth position.

Barcelona Winter Series Overall As a result of the third event, Garriga’s TENAZ continues to lead the series with 51 pts in 27 races. Second sits Cabiedes’ NOTICIA with 62 pts and in third is Doreste’s CLINICAS W with 78 pts. Rounding out the top five are Lucia Pombo’s BODEGA CAN MARLES in fourth with 89 pts and Alvaredo’s HANG TEN in fifth with 168 pts.  For more Barcelona J/70 Winter Series sailing information

UPCOMING EVENTS

Davis Island J/70 Winter Series Preview
(Tampa, FL)- A fleet of sixty J/70 teams is registered to sail the first regatta of the Davis Island Yacht Club’s J/70 Winter Series. Racing will take place this coming weekend on the fabled Tampa Bay and there is no question the Davis Island YC PRO/ RC team will be chomping at the bit to get in as many races as possible over the two days!

Over the past year, several new teams and interesting crew combinations are joining the fleet to produce more uncertainty as to which crews will be at the top of the leaderboard. Plus, many veteran J/70 teams will be back to judge how well some of those “newbies” are progressing! Here are some of the leading teams to watch out for at the top of the leaderboard; Charles Thompson’s British crew on BRUTUS III, Cate Muller-Terhunes’s CASTING COUCH, Mark Foster’s GRAVITY STORM, Bridget Groble’s JOHNNY UTAH, Peter Cunninighams’s Cayman Island crew on POWERPLAY, Bob Willis’s RIP RULLAH, Brian Keane’s SAVASANA, and Bruno Pasquinelli’s STAMPEDE.

In a healthy development for the class, 28 teams are vying for Corinthian Division honors, nearly 50% of the fleet!! That’s the highest Corinthians percentage in a major regatta (50+ boats) since that class started! And, there is also a half-dozen Mixed+ teams consisting of at least 50% women on the crew. Interestingly, one boat is truly a family affair- Nicole, Kytalin, and Seamus Hendrickson are sailing RASTA RACING from the Wayzata Yacht Club on Lake Minnetonka, MN!

J/88 Midwinter Championship Preview
(St. Petersburg, FL)- As part of the John Jennings Memorial Spinnaker Regatta, the J/88 class will be sailing their 2023 Midwinter Championship. The regatta will be hosted by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club with sailing taking place on Tampa Bay.

While not one of the larger fleets in recent years, the four boats that are participating will have extremely competitive racing as all teams have been winners in any number of J/88 regattas over time. The Fabulous Quartet includes Iris Vogel’s DEVIATION from New Rochelle, NY; Andy Graff’s EXILE from Chicago, IL; Andrew Weiss’ ONE TOO MANY from Hartsville, SC; and Bill Purdy’s WHIRLWIND from New York, NY. Recognizing this quartet of competitors are all well-sailed boats, one might expect to see some roller-coaster scorelines as it’s difficult to control more than one or two boats, especially if one or two others hit corners! It should be a fun regatta to watch! Sailing photo credits- Paul Todd/ Outsideimages.com. For more J/88 Midwinter Championship sailing information

J/22 California Dreamin’ Match Race Series Announcement
(San Francisco CA)– Applications are now open for match racing skippers wishing to compete in the California Dreamin’ Series. This longstanding series features events at three prominent clubs on the West Coast, beginning with San Diego YC on January 28-29 then St. Francis YC on March 4-5 – in J/22s at both clubs – and the final regatta at Long Beach YC in Catalina 37s.
Interested skippers are encouraged to visit https://forms.gle/UraWRy6n6nkuiMrb6 and submit a Request for Invitation to the Series. Priority will be given to skippers opting into all three events, but there are often spots available to those who can only make one or two.  Already ten skippers have submitted requests, so anyone wanting consideration needs to apply right away.

The California Dreamin’ Series events are traditionally the nation’s first match racing regattas of the year and serve an important role in the development of up-and-coming match racers, with several having moved on to the national competition. According to Co-Regatta Chair Bruce Stone, “CDS has incubated scores of skippers and crew into this specialized game and sharpened everyone’s skills for regular fleet racing.  The event is also much sought after by race committee volunteers and umpires as the action is non-stop and everyone involved must be focused so we can complete a full-round-robin each day – with 8 teams competing, that’s 28 matches on Saturday and the same on Sunday, weather permitting.  This usually offers great spectating at St. Francis as the course is right in front of our grill room, and San Diego offers viewing close to downtown, while Long Beach stages its event at the Belmont Pier.”
As a bonus, the winner of the California Dreamin’ Series receives a coveted invitation to the Ficker Cup the following year, which lends their team a chance to qualify for the Grade 1 Congressional Cup.
