Stratford Shoal Gearbuster Race Preview

(Greenwich, CT)- This coming weekend is the infamous “Gearbuster Race” run annually every fall by Indian Harbor YC. It’s a long day race around various government buoys in western Long Island Sound. It’s a popular event as the “grand finale” of fall sailing on the Sound. It is quite popular with J/sailors. There are 25 J/Teams sailing of the 51 boats total (50% of the fleet!). The teams are spread throughout the various PHRF divisions.

PHRF Doublehanded Division
In this fleet of half-dozen boats, virtually all of the participants are J/teamms. There are three J/120s (Sara & Josh Reisberg’s ABILYN, Richard Wests’s CHARLOTTE, & Christian Uecker’s HOUND DOG), plus Thomas Sa’s J/33 GUN DOG, and Stamford YC’s Junior Team on VALIANT.

PHRF A Division. (<9>
Two J/teams are sailing this half-dozen boat division. One is Len Sitar’s beautiful navy blue J/160 COUGAR and the other is the screaming-fast J/125 GOOD NEWS sailed by Macrae Sykes. 

PHRF B Division (10-55)
This ten-boat fleet is packed with hot J/crews that have all won various events over time. The two J/111s (Bill & Jackie Baxter’s FIREBALL & Pito Chickering’s THE ROOST) will always be tough competitors. Joining them are two J/120s (John Sartorius’s ALIBI & Bill Klein’s SPECK), Steve Losik’s J/121 HABIRU, and two J/112e’s (Brian Nelson’s HONEYBADGER and Eric & Maggie Deichmann’s MISCHIEF). 

PHRF C Division (56-91)
Four J/crews are sailing this nine-boat fleet. It includes two J/88s (Ken & Drew Hall’s NEVERMORE and Nicolas Delcourt’s OH JEE!!), Steve Landy & Derek Soohoo’s J/100 SANGUINE, and Randy Bourne’s J/105 STRANGE BREW.

PHRF D Division (>92)
Sailing this seven-boat fleet is JC Zucconi & Jim Townsend’s J/92 EASY RED.

PHRF Spinnakers Division
Sailing in this fleet of eleven boats is Bill Lewis’s J/37 CALIENT, Keith Lescale’s J/100 DAUPHINE, Ines Purcell’s J/105 PEREGRINA, and Ray Gustin & Dave Kaplan’s J/88 REDLINE. 

PHRF Non-spin Division
