Edgartown ’Round-the-Island Race Ready-to-roll in July

(Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, MA)— When Edgartown Yacht Club’s ’Round-the-Island Race (’RTI) returns to its traditional time slot in 2026 (July 25), it will provide racers with a steadier breeze that requires better execution and a more decisive test of sailing skill around Martha’s Vineyard.
At 52.0 nm, the ’RTI course is long enough to demand preparation and strategy, yet manageable enough that both racing and cruising boats typically finish by late afternoon or early evening. If tidal currents or lighter winds slow progress, the Race Committee may shorten the finish at one of four pre-designated shortened course gates, ensuring a rewarding day for all participants.

Here are FIVE “bucket list” reasons to enjoy the Edgartown RTI Race:
1. The Ultimate “Goldilocks” Distance Race: At roughly 52 nautical miles, the course is long enough to deliver the genuine thrill, tactical depth, and variable conditions of an offshore distance race. Yet, it is short enough to guarantee you will be back at the dock by nightfall-ready for a hot shower, a cold drink, and a bed that doesn’t tilt.
2. A Front-Row Seat to Breathtaking Geography: As you navigate the perimeter of Martha’s Vineyard, your crew will stretch its legs against a spectacular, ever-changing backdrop. You’ll pass the wind-carved dunes of the Southern coast, the historic lighthouses guarding the Sounds, and the dramatic, iconic red-clay cliffs of Aquinnah at Gay Head.

3. A 52-Mile Mental Marathon: Success requires constant mode-switching and outwitting complex, shape-shifting tidal currents. You’ll need to dodge the treacherous sandbars of Wasque Shoals, tracking the heavy Atlantic ocean swell, and transition from the steady, southwest thermal breezes of Vineyard Sound to a fast afternoon run capped by a notoriously chaotic turn around West Chop.
4. World-Class Racing Meets Classic Hospitality: The ashore experience matches the caliber of the race. Hosted by the Edgartown Yacht Club, the event is revered for its legendary race management and warm, classic New England hospitality. From registration to the post-race celebrations on the water’s edge, it is a weekend that treats sailors right.
5. Sail Among Legends: Steeped in history, this race has been a cornerstone of American sailing since 1938. It offers a rare opportunity for everyday racing crews to compete on the same waters- and for the same historic silver- as maritime legends. Etching your boat’s name onto an EYC ‘Round-the-Island trophy permanently links you to the history books.
