(Long Beach, CA)- This past weekend, Long Beach Yacht Club and Alamitos Bay Yacht Club co-hosted the annual Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Weekend regatta for J/70 and J/109 one-design classes. Plus, there was an offshore contingent of PHRF handicap racers. The fleet was blessed with three straight days of gorgeous weather and good sea breezes off the Long Beach waterfront.

J/70 Class
With 14 boats, the J/70s promised strong competition for the top of the leaderboard, and that’s what they got after seven races over three days of sailing. The final result to determine the winner came down to a tiebreaker at 16 pts apiece between Scott & Emma Deardorff’s CAKE and Ryan Cox’s DJ. By winning the last race, the Deardorff’s CAKE team took the gold medal, while Cox’s DJ crew was awarded the silver medal. Rounding out the podium for the bronze medal was long-time J/70 and J/24 class veteran Pat Toole’s 3 BIG DOGS from Santa Barbara.

The balance of the top five included Benjamin & JP Benahmed’s TUTATIS in fourth and Steve Wyman’s BOONDOGGLE in fifth place.

J/109 Class
This half-dozen-boat fleet featured a host of Southern California offshore veterans who should’ve produced a good battle for the top of the leaderboard. However, that was not the case, as Bob Little’s BLUE CRUSH team did exactly that, “crushed” the competition, counting six bullets in their seven-race scoreline for 7 pts! The balance of the podium did produce a battle for all three days. In the end, David Camerini & Russ Detwiler’s SYNERGY posted a strong 2-2-3-3-3-5 tally for 18 pts to take the silver medal. Settling for the bronze medal was Jack Mayer’s ZEPHYR with 20 pts.

PHRF B Division
This nine-boat fleet is mostly J/teams! Vying for the top of the leaderboard were several well-known offshore racing teams. After seven races, David Boatner’s venerable J/35 RIVAL won the class with 13.5 pts net. Taking the silver medal was Heinz & Greg Butner’s J/112E RAPTOR II with 20.5 pts net. Then, John Snook’s J/120 JIM took fourth place with 28.0 pts net.

2026 0702 LongBeach J105 05

Three J/105s were sailing in the eight-boat fleet. However, it was only Scott McDaniel’s OFF THE PORCH that dominated the racing with a 1-1-4 tally for 6.0 pts.
