J/121 Silvers, J/24s Have a Scream @ Barbados Sailing Week
(Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay, Barbados)- As they have for decades, the Barbados Cruising Club welcomed sailors from near and far across the Caribbean to their gorgeous corner of the Earth. Barbados is the easternmost of the Windward Islands and sailors love the long weekend of “fun in the sun”! The week-long regatta started with the local Coastal Offshore Races, then concluded with the famous Mt. Gay Round Barbados Race.
CSA Racing
In the CSA Racing division of seven boats, Peter Lewis’s J/121 WHISTLER managed to pull off a bronze medal in the Coastal Racing and a silver medal in the Round Barbados Race!
J/24 Class
The J/24s enjoyed their 35th-plus year of racing on the island. This year a quartet of teams engaged in spirited racing for three days. In the end, it turned into the proverbial “shoot-out at the OK Corral” between two teams- Bob Povey’s FLY and Cyril Lcecrenay’s BUNGA BUNGA. Between the two teams, they took all podium finishes! Both teams suffered SCP scoring penalties that had a material effect on the outcome of their respective regattas. Winning the first race and being forced to take an SCP was BUNGA BUNGA! Then, in the last race, both teams took SCPs!! In the end, Povey’s FLY posted a 2-1-1-1-4-3/SCP for 8 pts net to win the gold medal. Then, Lecrenay’s BUNGA BUNGA team suffered the ignominious distinction of getting hit with two SCPs to post a 3/SCP- 2-2-3-1- 4/SCP for 11 pts net! Rounding out the podium to earn the bronze medal was Greg Webster’s PHOENIX with 13 pts net.
