J/70 US National Championship 2025 Preview

Sailboats racing on a windy day with full sails catching the wind.

(Wayzata, MN)- The 2025 J/70 U.S. National Championship is being hosted by the Wayzata Yacht Club, situated on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Minnetonka. Long a bastion of the world’s best scow sailors, the lake and its two principal sailing clubs have grown into small keelboats over a few decades. First, it was the J/24s, then J/22s, and now the ubiquitous and globally popular International J/70 class. A fleet of thirty-six teams from the left and right coasts, as well as the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains in between, will be testing their mettle on the wildly treacherous, shifty, puffy Lake Minnetonka waters. Plus, there’s lots of weed to muddy things up a bit!

There are many “new kids on the block”, primarily from the Midwest, and a strong contingent of J/70 class veterans showing lots of scars from battles around the world. Some of those teams include Alec Cutler’s Bermuda team (Brad Rodi, Ryan Cox, & Chuck Pucciariello), Dave Jannetti’s TWO ODD crew (Greiner Hobbs, Patrick Wilson, & Travis Odenbach), local boys Bryce & Dick Kalow each sailing their boats- KID’S TABLE and SUPERIOR 1, Cate Muller-Terhune’s highly regarded Annapolis team (Allan Terhune, Jeff Hayden, & Katja Sertl), Chicagoan Jim Murry and his merry bandits aboard HESTIA (Steve Leuck, Will Howard, & Zeke Horowitz), and Leif & Laura Sigmond’s Chicago crew on NORBOY (Collin Kirby & Marty Kullman). It should be fun sailing! Pray for good weather, even though the Weather Godz don’t seem to be cooperating in the current weather forecasts (up to F2 or F3 tornado potential??).
