Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship Tuiga (1909) won the 30th Illes Balears Clà ssics Regatta in the Big Boat category. After winning two of the three hotly disputed races, the crew led by Daniel Pereira clinched the event one point ahead of The Lady Anne (1912).
Â
A historic face off
From day one, the highly anticipated duel between Tuiga and The Lady Anne, two survivors still sailing of the prestigious 15M IR class designed by William Fife, lived up to expectations. In a thermal 10-12 knot breeze, the two crews fought it out relentlessly, Tuiga finally taking the lead.
Â
The next day, despite a delayed start and light air (6-7 knots), the battle continued. Consistent and solid over the 8.2 nautical mile course off Cala Gamba, Tuiga confirmed her superiority.
Â
With no wind on the third day, the final ranking did not change giving victory to Tuiga ahead of The Lady Anne with Star Sapphire of London (1957) completing the podium.
Â
This success further boosts Yacht Club de Monaco’s presence on the Mediterranean circuit and Tuiga her status as a force to be reckoned with in the Big Boat category. The gaff cutter will now stay in the Balearic Islands for the next event: Trofeo Cormorán on 22-23 August.
