{"id":23888,"date":"2025-01-17T14:04:16","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T15:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southwest.jboats.com\/?p=23888"},"modified":"2025-01-17T16:10:57","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T16:10:57","slug":"malizia-seaexplorer-collision-with-unidentified-object-or-animal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jboatssouthwest.com\/malizia-seaexplorer-collision-with-unidentified-object-or-animal\/","title":{"rendered":"Malizia-Seaexplorer collision with unidentified object or animal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Vend\u00e9e Globe 2025<\/b><\/h1>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">This morning,\u00a0<i>Malizia-Seaexplorer<\/i>\u00a0skipper Boris Herrmann informed his team and the race management of serious damage to his port foil following a collision with an unidentified object or animal (OANI in French).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>An incident in the North Atlantic<\/b><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The incident happened at 02:31 UTC when Boris was sailing in the North Atlantic at 10\u00b0N and 37\u00b0W, around 900 nautical miles off the northeast coast of Brazil at a speed of 13.7 knots.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">After an initial inspection, he reported significant damage to the port foil, with no obvious damage to the rest of the boat so he is able to continue racing.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Staying the course despite the challenges<\/b><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although loss of the foil reduces the boat\u2019s performance, Boris is determined to finish the race. He cited the example of S\u00e9bastien Simon who continued after losing a foil early on in the event. \u201c<i>It\u2019s been a difficult day but the boat is safe and I\u2019m fine<\/i>,\u201d he confirmed.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Unhoped for solution found<\/b><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">What seemed impossible that morning became possible during the day. After sharing videos of the damage with his team, Boris took the decision to try and keep the foil on board \u2013 and he succeeded!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>An ingenious system to secure the foil<\/b><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a message sent in the afternoon, the skipper had some positive news: \u201c<i>We are back on a north-north west course, sailing as close to the wind as possible. I managed to retract the foil 80%. I used the grinder to cut away a bit of the damaged foil skin which helped me to stabilise it. A line is now secured at the front and back of the foil which is limiting the foil\u2019s movement quite effectively<\/i>,\u201d he explained. However he continues to adjust the system. \u201c<i>The rear line came loose but the front one is holding up well. I plan to stop the boat again and bear away to secure this rear line somehow. It\u2019s not that easy as the front of the foil is rounded and the line keeps slipping backwards<\/i>\u201d.\u00a0 He thinks he will be able to finish without major difficulties. \u201c<i>We won\u2019t be able to sail fast but a maximum 12 to 13 knot speed should be achievable<\/i>\u201d.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>A busy but promising day<\/b><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Boris sent his latest message at the end of the day: \u201c<i>My goal is to bring the boat back into the race without outside assistance. I worked on three versions of the rope system today. They kept coming loose so I went up on the foil to drill holes and fix the ends.
